During a thunderstorm, we heard the loud thunder and saw the intense flashes. But we do not know the location of the strikes. The accurate location of lightning strike is important to public safety. These all offer areas of concern to aviation, the construction industry, public utilities and defence. Techsense KILAT system provides realtime cloud-to-ground and cloud-to-cloud lightning location information to assist you in identifying lightning threats towards your precious facilities. KILAT is a hosted web-based information system which presents lightning activities on a geographical information system. KILAT helps you to visualize lightning activities from a bird's-eye view to support your decision making.

Managing Your Lightning Risk

KILAT's main screen consists of a map centered around the facility you want to monitor. The center of the map is known as the Critical Zone and the area surrounding it is divided into four distance ranges and eight directional segments. When lightning activity occurs, KILAT displays the location of the strike immediately on the map. If the lightning is a cloud-to-ground (cg) strike within 60km of the critical zone, the segment in which it occurred will be highlighted. During a storm, multiple segments may be highlighted, allowing you to visualize the path of the storm and determine if it is approaching your facility. If lightning activity reaches the Critical Zone, an SMS alert is sent to key users to notify them of the immediate risk. A panel on the display summarizes the number of lightning strikes in the last 10 minutes, providing you with a useful indicator of the intensity of the storm. KILAT also provides weekly statistical reports of lightning activity within your area for your records.
